In my many years as a personal and private secretary to the managing director of a small but extremely busy international company, the very nature of the business and it’s many fingers in pies all over the world meant that we had a constant stream of overseas visitors coming over to our UK headquarters for various meetings and training courses. I’m referring primarily to the late 1970s through to 2003, so many years of being at the sharp end of this business activity.
Because we didn’t have computers running everything at that time, every part of my job had some manual hand on it along the line. From taking telex messages in the old days through to faxes later on, it was years before anyone could say – let’s not meet up in person, let’s have a skype meeting, or video call. It’s much quicker to make joint meetings these days without leaving the desk!
